Energy Healing Aftercare

After a Session: Calm, Tiredness and Emotional Release

What might you feel after Reiki or energy healing? A practical guide to relaxation, tiredness, emotions, grounding, aftercare and when symptoms should not simply be attributed to the session.

What might you feel after an energy healing session?

People describe many different responses after Reiki-style and other energy-healing sessions. Some feel relaxed, sleepy or unusually quiet. Others feel thoughtful, emotional or simply ready to continue with their day.

Some people notice no obvious change at all. That is also a perfectly possible response.

There is no particular sensation that somebody needs to experience for a session to have taken place, and feelings afterwards should not automatically be treated as proof that a particular healing process has occurred.

This guide is part of our wider Energy Healing Explained section.

People sometimes describe

  • Feeling deeply relaxed
  • Sleepiness or tiredness
  • Feeling quiet or reflective
  • Emotions becoming more noticeable
  • A desire for some time alone
  • Greater awareness of physical sensations

Also completely possible

  • Feeling no obvious difference
  • Returning immediately to normal activities
  • Being unsure what to make of the session
  • Not wanting to discuss the experience
  • Deciding energy healing is not for you
  • Only reflecting on it much later

Why might you feel tired after Reiki or energy healing?

Tiredness after a session does not necessarily require a spiritual explanation.

Many energy-healing appointments involve lying or sitting quietly for an extended period in a low-stimulation environment. Someone who has been busy, stressed or mentally active beforehand may simply become more aware of how tired they already are once they stop.

Relaxing deeply can also leave someone feeling as though they would rather rest than immediately return to a busy schedule.

If you are tired, it is reasonable to rest where practical. There is no need to assume tiredness means that toxins, blocked energy or illness have somehow been removed.

Why might you feel emotional afterwards?

Quiet environments can create space for thoughts and feelings that may not have been particularly noticeable during a busy day.

Someone may remember an event, think about a relationship or simply feel emotional after spending an hour focusing inwardly. Tears can also occur without somebody knowing exactly why.

An emotional response can feel personally meaningful, but it does not automatically demonstrate that trauma has been released or that a particular emotional problem has been resolved.

A practitioner should give the person space rather than telling them exactly what their response means.

What should you do immediately after a session?

There is no special aftercare ritual that everyone needs to follow. Simple practical steps are usually enough:

  • Sit up and stand when you feel ready rather than rushing.
  • Take a moment to become fully aware of the room and surroundings.
  • Drink normally if you are thirsty.
  • Have something to eat if it is around your usual meal time.
  • Take a short walk or return to familiar activities.
  • Rest if you genuinely feel tired.
  • Write down anything you want to remember.
  • Allow thoughts and emotions to settle before trying to interpret them.

Do you need to drink lots of water after energy healing?

Advice to drink water is common after complementary treatments, but there is no need to turn ordinary hydration into a complicated healing rule.

If you are thirsty, drink normally. If you have been lying quietly for an hour and have not had anything to drink for a while, having some water may simply feel refreshing.

Claims that unusually large amounts of water are necessary to “flush toxins” or remove released energy should be treated separately from ordinary advice to stay appropriately hydrated.

What is emotional release?

The phrase emotional release is widely used in complementary and wellbeing settings.

In everyday terms, it may simply describe crying, acknowledging a feeling, remembering something significant or experiencing a sense of relief after holding emotions in.

That can be a genuine personal experience without requiring the claim that a practitioner has physically removed stored emotions or resolved psychological trauma.

If difficult emotions continue or become overwhelming, appropriate psychological or professional support may be more suitable than trying to explain everything through energy healing.

Give yourself permission to

  • Rest if you are tired
  • Feel emotional without explaining it
  • Say very little about the session
  • Change your mind about future sessions
  • Question an interpretation you are given
  • Return to normal life without a special ritual

Avoid feeling pressured to

  • Find a profound meaning immediately
  • Report a dramatic sensation
  • Accept that tiredness proves healing occurred
  • Interpret distress as automatically positive
  • Book another session immediately
  • Ignore symptoms that genuinely concern you

What about a “healing crisis”?

The term healing crisis is sometimes used to describe feeling temporarily worse following a complementary treatment.

It should not be used as a catch-all explanation for new, severe, persistent or worrying symptoms.

Feeling tired after a relaxing appointment may have a straightforward explanation. Feeling seriously unwell is different and should not automatically be dismissed as evidence that the treatment is working.

This distinction is explored further in Common Misconceptions About Energy Healing.

Grounding after an energy healing session

Grounding simply means bringing attention back to the present and ordinary surroundings.

You might notice your feet on the floor, look around the room, go outside for a short walk, have a normal meal or return to an everyday task.

This can be particularly useful if the session involved prolonged stillness, closed eyes, meditation or intense inward attention.

Our full Grounding & Integration guide explains the distinction between immediate grounding and longer-term reflection.

What about after an attunement or training session?

Some systems involve longer training sessions or spiritual attunements rather than a straightforward one-to-one appointment.

For example, Omni Healing has its own structured framework involving attunements, symbols, mantras and training levels.

Someone may attach significant spiritual meaning to an attunement, but practical aftercare can remain simple: allow time to settle, rest if needed and avoid feeling that a particular reaction is compulsory.

When should symptoms not simply be blamed on energy healing?

Energy healing should not become an explanation for every physical or emotional symptom that appears afterwards.

If someone feels significantly unwell, has symptoms that are severe, persistent or worsening, or is experiencing substantial psychological distress, appropriate professional advice may be needed.

A responsible practitioner should not tell someone to ignore concerning symptoms because they are supposedly proof that energy is shifting, toxins are leaving or deeper healing is taking place.

Should you book another session straight away?

Not necessarily.

Some people enjoy regular energy-healing sessions. Others attend once out of curiosity and do not feel a need to repeat the experience.

There is no requirement to commit immediately to a course of treatment simply because you felt tired, emotional or relaxed afterwards.

If repeated sessions are recommended, you can ask why, what the total cost will be and what the practitioner realistically expects them to achieve.

The first 24 hours: keep it ordinary

For most people, there is no need to organise the entire day around an energy-healing appointment.

If the session has left you relaxed, carry on normally. If you feel tired, give yourself more space. If something felt emotionally important, note it down and see whether it still feels important later.

The aim of aftercare is not to make the experience bigger. It is to allow enough space to decide what, if anything, was useful about it.

How this connects with Reiki sessions

If you have never attended Reiki before, understanding the complete appointment can remove much of the uncertainty around what happens before, during and afterwards.
